What is this strategy?
Support post-overdose response teams that connect persons who have experienced non-fatal drug overdoses to addiction treatment, recovery support, harm reduction services, primary healthcare, or other services or supports they need to improve their health or well-being.
Why post-overdose response teams?
A post-overdose response team (PORT) is a program that follows up with a person who has recently overdosed, typically (e.g. within 24-72 hours of the overdose) to provide support, education, and connections to needed resources (e.g. naloxone). PORT programs are a great opportunity to build relationships with people who use drugs in your community and create connections to offer a variety of wraparound health and social services, even if that connection occurs at a later time. These programs can be a lifesaving touchpoint for people who are often marginalized by society.
